Networks and Telecommunications offer a variety of services available to the Marshall University communities. These services are provided as the primary communications vehicle for students, staff and faculty within the University and to the world outside of the University. The goal is to provide the University a modern, state-of-the -art, cost-effective service, which consists of quality products for a reasonable cost. The Telecommunications and Networks division of Computing Services is responsible for setting up and maintaining Telephony/Video/LAN/WAN services. This group is also responsible for providing service to several remote campuses throughout West Virginia. See a list of these sites below.

Marshall University Network, known as MUNet, is composed of a Gigabit Ethernet backbone delivered over fiber connecting all of the buildings on Campus. The majority of intra-building connections are switched 10/100 Ethernet. Computing Services also provides support for 802.11x and Free-Space Optical wireless networks. MUNet is linked to the Internet via the state wide ATM Network. Marshall University has an OC3 (155Mbs full-duplex) ATM connection with 30Mbs dedicated to high speed access to the Internet. All remote sites are connected to the University across the statewide ATM Network with the exception of the Medical Education Building.

Telephone services at the main campus are presently provided through an Avaya Definity G3R PBX. The PBX was installed in 1986, and it has been enhanced considerably since then and has grown in size as the campus has expanded. There are approximately 3500 lines and 388 trunks, with a call volume of 15,000 out going trunk calls, 18,000 incoming trunk calls and 7,000 internal campus calls. The Definity G3R PBX has a distributed architecture: trunk groups and the Processor Port Network (PPN) which houses the switch processing electronics. The EPN’s are connected back to a central group switch with fiber or T1 lines. The group switch is located in the Drinko Library. Each EPN has processing power and can function independently to a certain extent. Several of the EPN’s are located in the Drinko Library, but others are located in 8 other switch rooms, including some which are in off-campus buildings.

All telecommunications services are provided to the departments on a cost recovery basis. At the request of the departmental unit, the Telecom and Network group installs equipment and provides services for a monthly cost. This includes any service calls to address problems experienced with equipment or service.
