W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications
Now more than ever, the world needs skilled journalists and media professionals who can connect with audiences. At Marshall University, our School of Journalism and Mass Communications, accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC), prepares students through hands-on experiences in student media, empowering them to become impactful storytellers.
Our school offers three majors: Advertising/Public Relations, Journalism (with three areas of emphasis – broadcast, multimedia, and sports), and Media Production (with two areas of emphasis – radio/TV production and management, and TV/video production). As part of an ACEJMC-accredited program, students gain a rigorous, standards-based education, complete internships for professional experience, build portfolios, and expand networks through active clubs in advertising, public relations, journalism, and broadcasting.
Students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through various student-run media outlets. The Parthenon, the university’s independent student newspaper established in 1898, allows students to engage in all aspects of news production, from reporting to editing. Additionally, students can participate in WMUL-FM, the campus radio station, or work for JMC TV, home to our news program MU Report and other tv productions, each opportunity can develop skills in broadcasting and audio production. These platforms provide practical experience, preparing students for careers in journalism and mass communications.
