Mechanical Engineering, B.S.M.E.
Undergraduate Degree
Program Overview

Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest and most versatile branches of engineering. As a discipline, Mechanical Engineering applies the fundamentals of engineering (based on physics, mathematics, chemistry and material science) to designing, innovating and fabricating mechanical, thermal or energy systems and devices.

You can begin to build your expertise in this dynamic field by earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia.

Taught by expert faculty in Marshall’s Weisberg Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Mechanical Engineering program integrates in-depth knowledge of core areas–mechanics, thermal science, material and manufacturing, control systems, and product design and development—with advanced studies in computing and physical sciences.

This integration is critical for work in multidisciplinary areas such as bio- and manufacturing engineering, robotics and mechatronics, nanotechnologies and energy systems. Tools ranging from computer simulation and systems modeling to advanced experimental techniques are developed and applied in order to provide a solid understanding of fundamental phenomena, processes and system characteristics in these areas.

Program Highlights
Degree Specializations

Mechanical Engineering majors can choose from six different degree specializations and may also choose to earn a second degree as a minor.

Available specializations:

  • Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer
  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Engineering Material
  • System Control
  • Dynamics and Vibrations
  • Solid Mechanics
ABET Accredited

The Mechanical Engineering bachelor’s degree program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), confirming that the BSME program meets the quality standards of the Mechanical Engineering profession.

Research Opportunities

The Mechanical Engineering program allows students to carry out a broad range of experimental and theoretical research in the areas of fluid dynamics, advanced manufacturing, engineering material, system dynamics and control, and energy systems.

Career Opportunities
The bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering program at Marshall University prepares students for leadership roles in industry, government, the private sector and academic research. The BSME program also supports students who want to pursue further graduate studies leading to a master’s or PhD degree or to obtain the Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • Scientific research and development
  • Computer and electronic product manufacturing
  • Transportation equipment manufacturing
  • Architectural, engineering, and related services
  • Machinery manufacturing
“I love how my professors care as much about my success as I do. Marshall also has tons of programs to help me be prepared for my degree.”

Admission Information

Requirements

  • Meet Marshall University admission requirements.
  • Admission to the B.S.M.E Engineering program requires a minimum composite ACT score of 21 with a math score of 24, or a minimum SAT composite of 750 with a SAT MATH section score of 580.

Students not meeting the ACT/SAT score requirements above may enroll in Pre-Engineering. Requirements for PreEngineering are a minimum composite ACT score of 19 with a math score of 19-23, or a minimum SAT composite of 900 with a math SAT of 460-550. Students who are admitted to the Pre-Engineering program generally will require an additional calendar year to complete the requirements for the B.S.M.E. degree. Transfer students must be eligible to take MTH 127/130, College Algebra, and MTH 132, Pre-Calculus. For more information on the program and admissions.
