The Modern Languages Program at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, offers a B.A. in Spanish, as well as a minor in Spanish and a minor in Spanish Studies.
According to a 2017 Census report, an estimated 41 million Americans, over 13% of the population, speak Spanish at home. While increasingly spoken in the United States, Spanish remains an essential language in Latin countries the world over. Here in West Virginia, students can earn a bachelor’s degree in Spanish, or minors in the language, that leave them with better opportunities for jobs, as they are ready for interaction with international people from many different countries. Spanish gives Marshall graduates an edge in many fields such as business, health care, education, political science, among others.
The Spanish bachelor’s program at Marshall not only hones students’ Spanish language skills, but allows them to experience different cultures and develop critical thinking and their powers of observation, analysis, logical reasoning, memory and adaptability. All these skills are immediately transferable to other areas of higher education and to a diversity of careers.
Students earning a B.A. in Spanish, or a Spanish minor participate in a faculty-led study abroad program. The Summer Madrid Spanish Language and Culture Program allows students to earn academic credit while studying at the Centro de Estudios Hispánicos with the Universidad Antonio de Nebrija in Madrid, Spain.
