Choosing a major is one of the most challenging decisions a student will make during the course of their undergraduate career. Often times, it is a cause of great stress for students, and one that doesn’t subside until a final decision is made.
If you’re having trouble deciding on a major, there are several steps you can take:
- First year students are encouraged to visit the Office of Career Education to meet with a Career Education Specialist. Consultations are available by appointment throughout the year. For more information, call 304-696-2370.
- Complete the FOCUS 2 self-assessments to find out what majors are available which would fit with your interests. To complete the self-assessments, simply log into your MyMU profile and select FOCUS 2 from the bottom of the launch pad. From there, you will have the ability to take up to five assessments to get a list of major and career suggestions. It is recommended that you take all five parts, as this will give you the most complete picture of your options.
- Maybe you know what major you want to complete, but aren’t exactly sure what career opportunities will exist after you graduate. In this case, visit What Can I Do With This Major? for more information about major and career exploration.
- Make sure you are taking courses which will work towards your completion of the General Education Requirements. In this way, no matter which major you ultimately decide to pursue, you will have already made progress toward graduation.
