Biography

Hanna Kozlowski, Associate Professor of Foundations, coordinates the five studio art courses that comprise the Foundations Experience within the School of Art & Design, as well as Foundations Review. She earned her MFA from Clemson University in 2010 after graduating summa cum laude from Anderson University (SC) with a BA in Art and a concentration in Painting & Drawing. Having worked in academia for almost a decade, she has developed and taught a wide range of art courses at the undergraduate level and seeks to create an interdisciplinary experience for her students by emphasizing contemporary art/visual culture and the combination of disparate media and processes. “My desire to teach stems from the belief that education can revitalize thinking. Although my academic background is primarily rooted in visual art, one of my overarching goals as a teacher is to cultivate in students the desire to be inquisitive about a broad range of subjects and to actively challenge preconceptions. Ultimately, I strive to not only produce skilled, knowledgeable artists but also compassionate, critical thinkers who recognize their potential to impact their communities and the world at large.”

In addition to teaching, Kozlowski is a painter and papercut artist. She has displayed her work nationally in over sixty exhibitions and in numerous catalogues. Her experimentation with papercutting developed out of an interest in her cultural heritage and the traditional Polish cut-paper folk art known as wycinanki. Fascinated by the disparity between the histories of oil painting and domestic craft, her studio practice has evolved into an investigation of the potential merging of these two methodologies. By physically combining paint and hand-cut paper, she seeks to reconcile their contextual differences and transform the notions of gender and culture associated with each.
