Autism Mentor & CEUs

Training Workshops
The WV Autism Training Center provides training workshops throughout the state on a variety of topics related to autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In most instances, attendance at WV ATC sponsored training is provided at no cost to registered clients and their families. Local school systems and related service providers may contract with the WV ATC to provide training for a fee. Please contact the WV ATC Associate Director of Training Jim Harris (304-696-2332) to discuss your specific training needs and a fee schedule. Local community groups or parent groups may also request training or a speaker for a reduced rate.

Obtaining Credit for Training Participation
Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) may be obtained through Mountwest Community and Technical College (MCTC). Participants can earn 1/10th of a credit hour per hour of attendance at training. For example, if you attend 10 hours of training, you will receive 1 credit.

Autism Mentor Training
Autism Mentor Training is an intensive four-day training developed for paraprofessionals who are working with or plan to work with students with ASD in the school system. The Autism Mentor Training, which is announced on our webpage on May 1st of each year, typically takes place during the summer months of June through August. To become an Autism Mentor, paraprofessionals must meet the following requirements:

● State mandated qualifications for Aide III
● Completion of a staff development program related to autism (30 hours of training
completed within the past three years and approved by the WV Department of Education)
● Two years experience working with a student with autism (approved by Local Education
Agency)
● Physical ability and stamina to work with a student with autism (approved by Local Education
Agency)

The WV ATC offers a variety of training that meets the staff development requirements to become an autism mentor:

● Autism Mentor Training (24 total hours of training)
● Advanced Mentor Training (must have successfully completed Autism Mentor Training)
● Special Topics Training
● Training provided through contracts with local school systems

Autism Mentor points (WV only) are awarded at a rate of .5 per hour of training. For example, if you attend a six hour training, you will receive 3 mentor points. You must complete 30 hours of training to obtain the 15 mentor points required to become an autism mentor. Please note that the WV Department of Education awards mentor points, not WV ATC.
