Welcome to the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Marshall University!
I am honored to serve as the Gerome A Gilbert Endowed Chair Professor and Founding Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Marshall University. These are exciting times filled with interdisciplinary opportunities for our program. We are one of the youngest programs in the college of engineering and computer sciences. We aim to grow in line with the ever-evolving landscape of engineering education and the way academia is being re-imagined and reshaped. We are in the Arthur Weisberg Applied Engineering Complex where faculty and students engage themselves in modern classrooms as well as with state-of-the art facilities for research and training. In collaboration with Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine at Marshall our BME program aims to elevate the research and education of our students through the lenses of engineering principles at the interface of biology and medicine. Enhanced interactions with industry and the medical school have led to new research collaborations and corporate partnerships. Our undergraduate program, which graduated its first class of students in Fall 2020, is now among one of the fastest growing in the College of Engineering and Computer Sciences at Marshall University.
As we envision the next decade for our program, we aim to position ourselves as one of the strongest in Biomedical Engineering in West Virginia and expand our influence throughout Appalachia and the rest of the country. We aim to grow our research strengths in biomaterials and tissue engineering; cellular and molecular bioengineering; nano and microsystems engineering; computational modeling and bioinformatics integrated with machine learning and artificial intelligence; biomedical imaging; and biomechanics and rehabilitation engineering. Moreover, we hope to integrate across these research areas and engage the broader community of scientists, engineers, clinicians, and industry leaders to drive new discoveries and innovations, develop the next generation of medical devices and technologies, and enhance the research and training opportunities for our students while remaining grounded in world class education.
I invite you to learn more about our programs, research centers, and our community. If you have any questions or wish to be involved, please do not hesitate to reach out to the department. We look forward to hearing from you.
