Alberto Coustasse-Hencke

Biography

Dr. Alberto M. Coustasse-Hencke is a Professor of Healthcare Management and Administration at the Lewis College of Business at Marshall University. Since joining Marshall University in 2008, he has taught graduate and doctoral courses in Healthcare Administration, Health Informatics, Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP), Health Professions, and the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program. His academic and research interests include healthcare management, health informatics, telemedicine, artificial intelligence in healthcare, cybersecurity, healthcare finance, healthcare policy, healthcare professional burnout, and healthcare technology innovation.

As one of the founding faculty members of Marshall University’s Health Informatics Program, established in 2011, Dr. Coustasse-Hencke helped develop the program and has served as Program Director since August 2021. He currently serves as a member of the DBA Committee and remains actively involved in mentoring graduate and doctoral students through dissertations, capstone projects, and applied research initiatives.

Before joining Marshall University, Dr. Coustasse-Hencke served as an Institutional Researcher at the Osteopathic Medical Center of Texas in Fort Worth, where he conducted health services research, quality improvement studies, healthcare finance analyses, outcomes evaluations, and health information technology projects. Earlier in his career, he served as Chief Medical Officer of the Health and Rehabilitation Centers of the National Defense Pension Fund in Santiago, Chile, where he participated in healthcare administration, strategic planning, quality improvement, and health information systems implementation.

Throughout his career at Marshall University, Dr. Coustasse-Hencke has held several leadership positions, including Chair of the Lewis College of Business Research Committee (2017–2023), Co-Director of the Assurance of Learning (AoL) Task Force (2018–2025), and Chair of the College Promotion and Tenure Committee. He also helped establish the Marshall University Business Research Conference, providing opportunities for faculty, students, and healthcare professionals to present scholarly and applied research.

Dr. Coustasse-Hencke has authored or co-authored more than 150 scholarly and professional publications and has presented more than 120 conference papers and research presentations at regional, national, and international meetings. His work has appeared in journals including JAMA Network Open, Health Care Management Review, Telemedicine and e-Health, The Permanente Journal, Journal of Ambulatory Care Management, and the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association, among many others.

His scholarly contributions have been recognized through numerous awards, including the Lewis College of Business Robert P. Alexander Research Faculty Award and more than twenty-eight Best Paper Awards from academic and professional organizations. In addition, he has served as a reviewer for journals such as JAMA, Health Services Research, Pediatrics, Health Care Management Review, Journal of Biomedical Informatics, and The Permanente Journal. He has also served as a grant reviewer for the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Israel Science Foundation, the University of Ottawa Medical Research Fund, and the Austrian Science Fund.

Dr. Coustasse-Hencke is a member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and the American College of Artificial Intelligence and Medicine (ACAIM). As of June 2026, his Google Scholar profile reports 4,103 citations, an H-index of 33, and an i10-index of 70. Through teaching, research, mentorship, and service, he remains committed to advancing healthcare management education and preparing future healthcare leaders.
