Mathematics through Algebra I emphasizes deep learning of mathematical content as well as progressive mathematics pedagogy appropriate for middle school students. This program is accredited by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

- Undergraduate GPA of 2.5 or a Master’s degree

The purpose of the program, in cooperation with the West Virginia Department of Education, is to provide teachers with an avenue to attain a Mathematics through Algebra I endorsement on their teaching license. After completing the program, passing the Middle School Mathematics Praxis II is required to qualify for the license endorsement. The courses of the program include the learning of mathematics content and mathematics pedagogy for middle grades.

The goals and objectives of the program cover mathematics content in the areas of Technical Mathematics, Finite Mathematics, Algebra, Geometry, and Pre-Calculus. The goals and objectives also cover mathematics pedagogy and technology that can be used in the mathematics classroom.
The program objectives are determined through the guidance of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards and objectives. Goals and objectives from the West Virginia Department of Education Next Generation Content Standards and Objectives for Mathematics and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) are also used as guidelines for course content.
