Approximately 100 rising ninth graders from throughout West Virginia who are part of Marshall University’s annual Health Science and Technology Academy (HSTA) had a fantastic experience at the Science Demo Show on July 9th. Participants got to ‘see’ sound with fire, walk on a non-Newtonian fluid, see Bernoulli’s principle in action, witness thunder and lightning in the classroom, launch see-through rockets in the dark, see smoke rings, and much more! Supplies for the demo show were sponsored through the HSTA program, the Department of Mathematics and Physics, and Marshall University. The workshop was hosted by Drs. Sean and Sachiko McBride with assistance provided by two Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) students working with Dr. Sean McBride that are funded by the National Science Foundation (Isabella Mays – William and Mary and Brennon Craigo – Marshall University) and Darby McGinnis, a member of MU’s Society of Physics Students.
