This project combined Susan Eacker’s experience in southern women’s history and Geoff Eacker’s interest and experience in the banjo.
Dr. Eacker earned her Ph.D. in history from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She also holds a B.A. and an M.A. in political science from Miami University. Dr. Eacker is an assistant professor of history at Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky where she teaches southern women’s history and oral history. Mr. Eacker is the Director of the Art Center at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where he teaches fine wood working. He also makes and plays the five string banjo.
During and following their residency at CSEGA, the Eackers have been very active in sharing their research. Their exhibit entitled, “Banjo Women in West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky: A Multimedia Exhibit,” has been displayed at numerous gallery sites in West Virginia and Kentucky. The exhibit incorporated photographs, tape-recorded music, and text and was donated to CSEGA by the Eackers. Their work was featured in a two-part segment produced by West Virginia Public Radio. The taped interviews and transcripts from the Eackers’ project were donated to the Oral History program.
