Fall 2023 Student Workshops
The CWVWP designed and delivered three writing workshops this fall to help local districts prepare students for the Young Writers contest. They were held in Boone, Mingo, and Kanawha County. The CWVWP expanded this opportunity to experienced writing teachers, Terry Bartley, Emily Patterson, Travis Vandal, and Nancy Kline to develop and deliver workshops to support this important initiative.
These workshops were developed around West Virginia published texts and potentially led to possible entries for Young Writers contest.
Terry Bartley- A Little Excitement!
Terry facilitated a workshop to 21 students in 9-12th from Scott High School about outlining and developing a short story. They all wrote short stories about the holidays using the book as inspiration.
Emily Patterson, Travis Vandal-Monsters and Ghosts of WV
Students at John Adams Middle School produced two different pieces of writing, either of which could be continued and polished for young writers’ submissions.
Nancy Kline-All The Way to Morning, by Mark Harshman,
Students at Lenore PK-8 had the opportunity to learn examples of figurative language in creative writing. They received certificates of completion and even got to bring their favorite pillow to snuggle with as they wrote.
If this of interest to you in the future, please send all questions and communications about future student workshops to Dr. Donna Atwood, wallace74@marshall.edu.
