Students, regardless of the identities they bring to campus, face many challenges that can hinder their persistence towards graduation. Programs and retention services have been implemented nationally and at MU to acknowledge the unique challenges to higher education as faced by various minority groups. Although the MU LGBTQ+ Office has developed programming for LGBTQ+ individuals, additional support and research is needed to track self-identified LGBTQ+ student persistence while supplying them with the necessary support and guidance to face life’s challenges (the “coming out” process, family and religious turmoil, etc.). What higher administrators initiate for services and support can affect the campus experience for LGBTQ+ students. By providing a supportive and educational mentoring opportunity to students, Marshall will help to establish a more diverse yet welcoming and inclusive campus environment.
