Biography
Carrie Nilles, originally from New York, relocated to Appalachia over 20 years ago and has since developed a deep appreciation for the region’s environment and community. With a solid background in administration, program coordination, and teaching, she currently serves as the Sustainability Coordinator at Marshall University. In this role, she helps coordinate campus sustainability programs, tracks energy and utility usage, manages recycling and shredding data, and oversees various sustainability projects. Additionally, she co-directs West Virginia Clean Cities and Communities. This coalition operates across urban, suburban, and rural areas to enhance the environment, boost energy security, and promote economic prosperity by forming partnerships that support the development of affordable, efficient, and clean transportation fuels and technologies.
Carrie holds a BA in Sociology from The Catholic University of America and an MA in Sociology from the University of Arizona. She previously taught in the Sociology Department at Marshall University before transitioning to the Sustainability Department. This move sparked her passion for sustainability and continues to foster positive relationships within her community and beyond.
