Bio
Jane Hill has previously taught at Clemson University (where she received the BA and MA in English), the University of Illinois (from which she received her PhD in English, specializing in the American Novel), the University of Georgia, Kennesaw State University, and the University of West Georgia, where she served as chair of her Department from 2003-2008. In July 2009 she came to Marshall as chair of the English Department. She also worked as senior editor in small trade publishing houses from 1986-1990. She likes her friends, Duke University men’s basketball, movies, Van Morrison, the Indigo Girls, the Dixie Chicks, Jackson Browne, and John Prine. She writes about Ann Beattie, David Bottoms, James Dickey, Gail Godwin, Mary Lee Settle, and other contemporary authors, as well as movies on occasion. Her idols include Diane Keaton, the Coen brothers, her own brothers (James and John), Claire Danes, Wayne Booth, George McGovern, Garry Trudeau, and Mike Krzyzewski. She lives in Huntington with her husband Bob and their dogs Byron, Lena, and Spangle, named for characters in Faulkner’s Light in August and Ann Beattie’s Falling in Place. Her daughter Betsy lives in her house in Marietta, Georgia, giving her a warm place to visit during the West Virginia winters. Her stepsons Mike and Jay live in Gainesville, Florida, and Camus, Washington, respectively, also nice places to visit. She was once the North Florida Junior Bowling Champion.
