Scenario: Genetically-Modified Organism (GMO) Food
A group of university students is protesting on campus to demand that all food in dormitory cafeterias be free of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). These students are concerned about the long-term safety of consuming GMO food, and point out that GMO food is uncommon in many countries outside the US. They also regard students who eat in dorm cafeterias as “captive” customers, who already do not have much choice in the food that they eat.
The campus nutritionist says that GMO food is safe, and that GMO crops are more eco-friendly because they require fewer pesticides. The university’s VP of Finance has indicated that switching to non-GMO ingredients would dramatically increase the cost of student meal plans. Additionally, there are some food items where there are no substitutes for genetically modified ingredients, which could reduce the variety of food offered in the cafeteria.
Review and evaluate the documents provided below, consider what other information would be helpful in your understanding of the issue and then write Op ed to send to the editor of The Parthenon, the school newspaper. Remember, to be truly persuasive and increase the odds of getting your opinion piece published, you need to justify your points by linking them to the most credible and relevant evidence you read in the seven documents. Although you do not need to cite the sources formally as you would for a research paper, you should refer to specific documents by mentioning either the document numbers, author and/or source so that the editor recognizes you are informed on this topic.
