Biography
Erik is a lifelong West Virginian, a Son of Marshall (B.A. Finance, 1995) and a graduate of the West Virginia University College of Law. Before returning to Marshall University in 2024 as Assistant General Counsel, Erik spent 26 years in private practice in the state and federal courts of West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio, engaged primarily in civil litigation. Among other professional accomplishments, Erik has been recognized with an AV Martindale Hubbell rating as well as recognition in The Best Lawyers in America® and Chambers USA publications. He is a Past President of Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia. He is a graduate of Leadership West Virginia. In approaching his duties as Assistant General Counsel, Erik brings experience as a former Adjunct Professor who has taught courses at Marshall for both the School of Pharmacy and the Lewis College of Business. Erik has presented to students of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine on professional liability and risk management issues, and to such legal professional organizations as the West Virginia State Bar, West Virginia Association of Justice, Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia and the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC). Erik is active in the community, currently serving on the Boards of Directors for the Huntington YMCA, the Marshall Artists Series and the Carter G. Woodson Foundation. He is a Past President of the Board of United Way of The River Cities. Erik and his wife Cindy (MU graduate, Class of 1994) reside in Huntington and have four sons, Andy, Justin, Jamie and Derik.
