About our Geography Degrees

In addition to regular classroom instruction, students work directly with the latest geospatial technologies as they gain new skills and use them to address important fields like urban planning, environmental management, weather forecasting, disaster response, economic development, homeland security, and a range of international issues.

geography degreesBeyond the regular coursework, students have opportunities to pursue internships and independent study courses that allow them to focus their skills and apply them in a workplace environment. At the end of their studies, students work with faculty to design and implement their own research projects, either as a Capstone course for undergraduates or a research project for graduate students. The department’s program also provides a solid foundation for students wishing to continue in many other graduate programs.

Students in Geography at Marshall enjoy the opportunities to interact with faculty and other students in our close-knit department. You will gain valuable knowledge and job skills in a congenial learning environment. Internships and independent studies are available for students to apply and develop their geographic skills to real-life problem solving. Grad students may qualify for assistantships which include stipends and tuition waivers.

The Geography Department offers a supportive atmosphere featuring responsive, accomplished faculty and state-of-the-art facilities. The faculty maintains a flexible curriculum, involves students in research, keeps offerings updated with changes in the field and the job market, and helps students obtain internships. As a result, many of our students secure employment as professional geographers before graduation. Geography majors are trained in the traditions and methods of geography including the latest geo-spatial technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS).
