Residency Requirement Hold

Why do I have a Residency Requirement Hold?

A residency requirement hold is placed on the accounts of all Freshman and Sophomore students that have not met the terms of Marshall University’s Residency Requirement.  To meet this requirement, students must sign up to live in the residence halls unless they have received an approved exemption.

I live near campus and plan to commute from home. What do I need to do?

To be approved to live at home and commute to school, you must complete the Commute Release Request form and submit the appropriate documentation.  Housing and Residence Life will verify your documentation and communicate with you the outcome of your release request. Please note that you must live at your permanent address (from which you applied to the university) with your parent(s) or legal guardian.

Are there other ways to receive an exemption other than commute?

There are limited other exemptions that you may review in the Residency Requirement.  Other exemptions include over 21 years old (before the semester begins), junior status (request not reviewed until hours have been officially earned at the end of the semester), and out of high school for two full years before the start of the semester. Please note, other than meeting the age or credit hour requirement, all other exemptions such as medical and financial are due to significant extenuating circumstances that require detailed documentation.
