Major / Minor Requirements

The Japanese Language Program, a part of the Department of Modern Languages, offers a major in Japanese Language and two minors: Japanese Language and Japanese Studies.

The Japanese Language Major

  • Consists of ten (10) courses for a total of thirty (30) credit hours
  • Emphasizes fluency in the language
  • Begins with 102
  • Includes twenty-one (21) hours above 204
  • Includes nine (9) hours at the 400-level (including the 490 capstone course)
  • Counts two courses taught in English towards the major

The Japanese Language Minor

  • Consists of five courses for a total of fifteen (15) credit hours
  • Emphasizes competency in the language
  • Begins with 102
  • Counts one course taught in English towards the minor

The Japanese Studies Minor

  • Consists of five courses for a total of fifteen (15) credit hours
  • Emphasizes competency in the country and its culture
  • Can count 101 or 102 language course towards the minor
  • Six (6) hours must be at the 300- or 400- level.
