Class of 1969
Wiley joined the Naval Reserve in 1962 and served as an active duty journalist for two combat tours of Vietnam aboard the USS Intrepid. After graduating from Marshall, Wiley received a commission in the Naval reserve and later received a commission in the Kentucky Army National Guard. He reached lieutenant colonel in the U. S. Army Reserve. His combined service totals more than 27 years.
A thirty-year career with Ashland Oil started immediately after graduation from Marshall’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Wiley’s tenure at Ashland Oil ran from 1969-1999 where he rose to director of Advertising and Corporate Communications. Under his guidance Ashland Oil dedicated substantial public service support to messages encouraging quality education. One of the company’s campaigns aimed at dropout prevention became so successful it was adopted as a public service campaign by the Advertising Council.
Wiley has been a member of several professional, charitable and civic organizations, including the Chambers of Commerce and Advertising Clubs in Huntington and Louisville, KY, chairman of the board of trustees of the Marshall Artists Series and the citizens advisory committee for Kentucky Public Broadcasting (KET) and the board of directors of the West Virginia Public Broadcasting Foundation. He is the president and owner Total Communications in Huntington, WV.
