Ruby Dyer was named a School of Journalism and Mass Communications’ Distinguished Alumnus in recognition of her accomplishments in the field of journalism education. A desire to combine her love of journalism and English led her to the classroom. A journalism and English teacher, as well as a faculty adviser to the student newspaper and yearbook at Wayne High School since 1975, she has helped her students and their publications garner a remarkable record of honors in journalism competition, both locally and nationally. Dyer was named Wayne County Teacher of the Year in 1983 and again in 2008 when she also was a finalist for West Virginia Teacher of the Year. She was among Wayne County’s Senior Quest Support Personnel after retirement. She was a reviewer for Lorrie Lynch’s Cengage text, Exploring Journalism and the Media, and she taught many workshop sessions for high school journalists at Marshall University events.
