ABOUT:

“The W. Page Pitt School of Journalism & Mass Communications will celebrate the 80s with Retro Day on April 9, 2024. On Retro Day many students can expect to see those involved in the School of Journalism & Mass Communications dressed up in 80s attire. Alongside dressing up, Marshall’s radio station WMUL will be veering from their standard content, playing music from the 80s all day and even including some references to the 80s in their special edition newscast. WMUL will also be posting graphics and other content from the 80s on their social media.

WMUL’s Programming Director Peyton Cisco has been hard at work for Retro Day. He has been searching for content WMUL aired in the 80s so it can be aired again. This serves as a callback but also to show the student body and other listeners the change in audio quality for radio broadcasts since the 80s while also showing the difference in content.

The Parthenon plans on publishing a special edition of the newspaper on their website. The special edition will contain stories written by current members of the parthenon about events in the 80s. JMC TV also has plans for Retro Day, their goal is to interview people celebrating Retro Day about their experiences in the 80s. They plan on culminating their video interviews into a long form video that will be published on the JMC TV Youtube channel.

The Dead Podcasters Society also release a 20 minute podcast discussing the historic and cultural highpoints of the 80s, and they will be releasing it on SoundCloud.

However, the School of Journalism & Mass Communications is not the only organization celebrating Retro Day. Gaming@MarshallU will be hosting a Street Fighter tournament on Retro Day alongside having a variety of other games from the 80s set up in the Memorial Student Center, with the activities starting at 1:30 p.m. Some of the games that will be available to play are Pac-Man, Frogger, Tetris, Dig-Dug, and Super Mario Bros. The event is open to anyone who wants to come and play at no cost!”
