Challenged at the Helena (MT) High School because of disturbing descriptions of rape, mutilation, and murder. Supporters of the book say its literary value – specifically its insights into American Indian society and Montana History – outweighs the controversial passages.

Challenged, but retained, at Bozeman (MT) high school despite objections to its descriptions of rape, mutilation, sex, and violence.
