2019
This New York Times bestseller was one of eight options randomly assigned to students in a pre-International Baccalaureate English class. A parent objected to vulgar and sexually violent language in this coming-of-age story set in WWII Leningrad. Lee County (FL) School District officials banned the book and vowed to “tighten up the process for selecting books for this kind of class.”
2016
Challenged at the Republic Schools in Nashville (TN) despite the charter school operator redacting and changing portions of the book that were deemed “inappropriate” for middle school students. The 2008 work of historical fiction chronicles the perils and lives of two boys in World War II-era Leningrad and includes profanity and sexually explicit scenes.
