This children’s picture book on gender identity was challenged by a Waukee (IA) Public Library patron objecting to its display on a shelf of new books. Her concerns, and those of another patron, were as follows: “highly controversial subject and needs to be taught by the parent first,” “may be confusing to children,” “it’s a sexual topic,” and “it’s an adult theme.” Both patrons suggested creating a new “parent guided children’s book section” for similar books. The item was retained as cataloged.
