2008
Challenged at the Brookwood (AL) High School library due to a complaint that the book has sexual content and language. The grandmother stated that the school should “teach abstinence and no sex before marriage.” Wittlinger, the book’s author, said in a letter to the school system that she was very surprised to learn that her book was being called “offensive” and “sick” because she said the purpose of the book is not meant to be a how-to guide for oral sex. Instead, it is a cautionary tale to teach kids that oral sex is “real” sex and not just the “cool thing to do.” The board decided eventually to retain the book “on the advice of legal counsel.”
