West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission Hosts Convening to Expand Microcredentials for Higher Education and Workforce Development 

West Virginia is set to host a pivotal convening, Credential WV Summit 2024: A New Paradigm for Affordable and Accessible Learning, from October 9-11, 2024, at Stonewall Jackson Resort, aimed at expanding microcredentials to meet the growing demands of industry and economic development.  

Importance of Microcredentials 

Microcredentials are short, focused courses that provide learners with specific skills and knowledge in a particular area. Unlike traditional degrees, microcredentials are designed to be flexible, accessible, and quickly attainable, making them an ideal solution for both students and working professionals. As industries evolve, the need for a workforce that can rapidly adapt to new technologies and methodologies becomes increasingly important. Microcredentials offer a way to bridge the skills gap, ensuring that individuals are prepared to meet the demands of modern employers. 

Economic and Industry Demands in West Virginia 

West Virginia’s economy is undergoing significant transformation, with a growing emphasis on sectors such as technology, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing. According to recent data, 95% of employers in the United States see benefits in their employees accruing microcredentials, according to a survey from Collegis Education and UPCEA, the association for college and university leaders in online and professional continuing education. Additionally, Among the leaders surveyed from 500 organizations, 76 percent said pursuing microcredentials demonstrates an employee’s willingness to develop their skills. In West Virginia, the demand for skilled workers in these emerging industries is particularly high, making the expansion of microcredentials a strategic priority for the state’s economic development.
