The Marshall University Minority Health Institute will receive $1.7 million over five years, from 2023-28, through a U.S. Department of Education grant to fund a program focused on minority and low-income students:

The Minority Health Institute recently received $100,000 in March 2023 to address and work with the Bureau to coordinate statewide efforts to reduce health inequity for vulnerable populations as defined by race/ethnicity, socio-economic status, geography, age, disability status, and among other populations identified to be at risk for health disparities.

The Minority Health Institute recently received $199,000.00 in January 2022 to address COVID-19 Vaccination Equity and Prioritizing Populations Disproportionately Affected by COVID-19. The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR), Bureau for Public Health (BPH), Office of Epidemiology and Prevention Services (OEPS), Immunization Services Division (ISD) has received funding through the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2021, P.L. 116-260 and the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021, P.L. 117-2 to improve COVID-19 vaccine equity, ensure access to vaccines for disproportionately affected populations and to enhance COVID-19 vaccine confidence.

Marshall University Minority  Health Institute was awarded $356,000.00 in October 2021 to Address COVID-19 Health Disparities Among Racial and Ethnic Minorities in West Virginia from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WV DHHR) Bureau for Public Health.

Unicare Health Plan of West Virginia has partnered with the Marshall University Minority Health Institute to provide a community investment grant of one million dollars ($1,000,000) to be used to improve health equity and address social determinants of health targeting the underserved, minority populations.

Dr. Logan along with LaDawna Walker-Dean (WV Minority Health Initiative Program Coordinator) and Sidney Blackburn a Marshall University Undergraduate Student discusses the history of environmental justice in public health; the Minority Health Institute’s current research and programs; and will highlight the work of students on climate change and environmental justice.

The Minority Health Institute was recently awarded $75,000 from The West Virginia Bureau for Public Health to continue with the State’s goal to address and reduce health disparities for minorities and vulnerable populations in West Virginia. This initiative is funded from July 1st, 2020- to June 30th, 2021.

Gov. Jim Justice and Director Jill Upson of the Herbert Henderson Office of Minority Affairs (HHOMA) awarded $25,000 to the Marshall University Minority Health Institute to aid in their efforts to improve community health and economic development in Kanawha County, West Virginia. The pilot program, called Building Resources In Diverse Geographic Environments (BRIDGE), is a comprehensive community revitalization effort with a mission of addressing poverty, improving community-wide health, stimulating labor force participation, and supporting economic development. The program also aims to combat substance abuse and improve crime rates, as well as neighborhood revitalization. The Minority Health Institute was one out of 10 organizations that were chosen to receive this award.

National Diabetes Prevention Program: Marshall’s Minority Health Institute is partnering with Cabell-Huntington Health Department and Chertow Diabetes Center to address Type II Diabetes, which affects African Americans and minorities at a higher rate than non-minorities.

Minority Health Institute Pre-Diabetes Program

Cabell Huntington Hospital donates $25,000.00 to the Minority Health Institute to combat obesity, diabetes, and other diseases by developing community gardens in Cabell County.

Marshall University’s Department of Public Health has established the Minority Health Institute to address health disparities and health equity among minority and underserved populations in the state of West Virginia. The Minority Health Institute was awarded $50,000 in the 1st year to assist with the development of a comprehensive strategic plan for the state’s minority health improvement initiatives.
