Community Connections Conference, June 1-2, 2023
Charleston, WV
The Marshall University Minority Health Institute’s abstract was accepted to present at the Community Connections Conference in Charleston, WV. The topic was Addressing Healthcare Disparities: Access and Utilization of Services. Participants learned about data regarding healthcare disparities in West Virginia and West Virginia Minority Health Fairs and recommended strategies and solutions to address Healthcare Disparities for minorities and vulnerable populations.
National Minority Health Health Month Event
The 2nd Annual National Minority Health Month was held on Marshall University’s campus on April 12, 2023—Theresa Galloway performed during this event. Shirley Birchfield and her team from Valley Health System did free COVID-19 testing and vaccinations and brought awareness to the community. Several organizations and university departments participated in this event.

Minority Health Institute Plays Role in Overdose Preventative Care
The Marshall University Minority Health Institute is playing a role in a new effort to help the Cabell County Quick Response Team provide reactive care for overdose victims and preventative care. Community outreach events are being hosted outside the Huntington City Mission Chapel, at 624 10th St., on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 4 p.m. Services currently offered include testing, vaccinations, and service referrals. National Minority Health Month was held on Marshall University’s campus on April 28, 2022. Antoine Cabarrus, Gospel Recording artist and activist, performed during this event. Tionna Morrison, Community Outreach Worker for PAAC (Partnership of African American Churches), participated as a vendor and brought COVID-19 awareness information to the community.

In West Virginia, minority communities are disproportionately impacted by various health-related issues such as stigmas surrounding diseases and treatment and a lack of education regarding prevention and available services, Marshall University’s minority health director said.
With ambitions of combatting such disparities amongst minority communities, LaDawna Walker-Dean organized West Virginia’s inaugural Minority Health Fair, which occurred open to the public Thursday at the Memorial Student Center.
