Opportunities for Seniors

Whether you are interested in studying away, studying abroad, researching in the U.S. or internationally, or funding your graduate education, there is likely to be an opportunity for which you might be a good fit. This list is meant to provide an overview of the kinds of awards for which the Office of National Scholarships can help you apply, but there are lots of other opportunities out there as well. Review this list to find something that suits you, or go out and find your own opportunity and bring it to us! Either way, the Office of National Scholarships is here to help YOU achieve your goals.

  • Available to all students who have at least a 2.5 GPA
  • Opportunity to study at another school in the U.S. while continuing to pay tuition to Marshall University

https://www.gilmanscholarship.org/

  • Available to undergraduates from any major who are receiving the Pell Grant at the time of application
  • Pays up to $5,000 towards study abroad
  • Extra benefit of ~$3,000 for students studying a “critical need” language (as defined on their website)
  • STEM Supplemental Award also available
  • Offers spring, summer, and fall semester options

  • Available to undergraduate and graduate students
  • Funds study abroad in countries other than Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand
  • Study abroad length requirements vary from summer, a semester, or a full year
  • Must be pursuing a major that is related to U.S. national security and have plans to work in the federal government

  • Available to undergraduates and graduate students
  • Offers the opportunity to intensively study one of 13 critical languages (as defined on their website) in a foreign country
  • Involves intensive language study and cultural immersion
  • Travel period runs from June-August

  • Available to undergraduate students with at least a 2.8 GPA
  • Provides scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia
  • Some program length requirements apply
  • Must complete and report on a service project following return to the U.S.

  • Available to undergraduate students
  • Supports active research participation by undergraduate students in NSF-funded areas
  • Funded summer research opportunities at sites around the country
  • Apply directly to the experience(s) in which you are interested

  • Available to undergraduate and graduate students
  • Supports international research experiences for U.S. students
  • Apply directly to NSF-funded investigators who receive IRES awards.

  • Provides scholarships for STEM students, including full tuition, stipends, internships, and employment with the DoD
  • Must be pursuing a degree in a SMART STEM discipline, have at least a 3.0 GPA and wish to work in the federal government

  • Available to undergraduate students from any major
  • Asks students to respond to an prompt about an ethical issue
  • Awards first, second, third, and honorable mention prizes
  • Essay length is approximately 3,000-4,000 words

  • Complete an English Teaching Assistant grant abroad

  • Does not cover professional doctoral degrees

  • Fully funds a graduate research degree at Cambridge University
  • Sponsored by Bill Gates
  • Involves applying to Cambridge as part of the application process
  • Average winner GPA is 3.7 to 4.0

  • Apply early in your senior year
  • Must be interested in getting a PhD in applied physical, biological, or engineering sciences
  • Funds both graduate tuition and a personal stipend
  • Winners must make a commitment to use their skills to help the U.S. in times of national emergency

  • Apply in your senior year
  • Must be planning to become a teacher in U.S. history, government, or social studies at the 7-12 level
  • Winners make a commitment to teach in the above fields one year for each year of support they receive
  • Funds graduate study in the above fields, including tuition, fees, and books

  • Open to students with a 3.7 GPA or higher
  • Apply early in your senior year
  • Funds 1-2 years of study in the U.K.
  • Open to any major, but must be a good ambassador for both the U.S. and the U.K.

  • One of the most prestigious scholarships in the world
  • Apply early in your senior year
  • Funds graduate study at Oxford University
  • Winners chosen based on academic achievements, leadership potential, and commitment to others and the common good
  • Must be 23 or younger to apply
  • Average GPA of winners is over 3.9

  • Federal internship opportunities in various fields for currently enrolled students.
