Award winners, retirees to be recognized in general faculty meeting

Awards of distinction will be presented and retiring faculty recognized during Marshall University’s spring general faculty meeting Tuesday, April 26, at the Joan C. Edwards Performing Arts Center on the Huntington campus.

The meeting begins at 2 p.m. and will include remarks from Marshall President Dr. Jerome Gilbert and Faculty Senate Chair Dr. Larry Stickler.

Four people will be given the Distinguished Service Awards.  To qualify for Distinguished Service Awards, persons must have at least 20 years of service at Marshall University, a record of distinguished service to the university and/or college, and a record of distinguished teaching as evidenced by peer, administrative and/or student evaluations. The Distinguished Service Award winners, each of whom will receive $1,000, are:

  • Dr. Robert Angel, professor, Special Education, College of Education and Professional Development
  • Dr. Sandra Bailey, professor,  Elementary and Secondary Education, College of Education and Professional Development
  • Dr. David Hatfield, associate professor, English, College of Liberal Arts
  • Dr. Lee Olson, professor,  Leadership Studies, College of Education and Professional Development

Three people will receive the Distinguished Artists and Scholars Award. To be eligible for the Distinguished Artists and Scholars Awards, faculty members must either be tenured or hold tenure-track appointments. The purpose of the award is to recognize distinction in the fields of artistic and scholarly activity on the part of the Marshall faculty. The senior recipients of the Distinguished Artists and Scholars Awards receive $2,000 apiece while the junior recipient receives $1,000. The Distinguished Artists and Scholars Award will be given to:

Senior Recipients:

  • Gang Chen, associate professor, Engineering, College of Information Technology and Engineering
  • Burnis Morris, professor, Journalism and Mass Communications, College of Arts and Media

Junior Recipient:

  • Dr. Zelideth Rivas, assistant professor, Modern Languages, College of Liberal Arts

One person will receive the John and Frances Rucker Graduate Adviser of the Year award, which acknowledges the contributions of Marshall’s outstanding graduate advisers. She is:

  • Dr. Kristen Lillvis, assistant professor, English, College of Liberal Arts

Twenty-two retiring faculty, representing 539 years of service, will be recognized. They are:

  • Dr. Marty Amerikaner, professor, Psychology, College of Liberal Arts, 28 years
  • Dr. Robert Angel, professor, Special Education, College of Education and Professional Development, 40 years
  • Dr. Sandra Bailey, professor, Elementary and Secondary Education, College of Education and Professional Development, 20 years
  • Dr. Bruce Conrad, associate professor, Accountancy and Legal Environment, College of Business, 32 years
  • Dr. Michael Cunningham, professor, Leadership Studies, College of Education and Professional Development, 20 years
  • Dr. Samuel Dameron, professor, Criminal Justice, College of Science, 31 years
  • Dr. Paul Durst, assistant professor, Anatomy and Pathology, School of Medicine, 14 years
  • Dr. Carl Gruetter, professor, Pharmacology, Physiology and Toxicology, School of Medicine, 34 years
  • Jeanne Hubbard, instructor, English, College of Liberal Arts, 5 years
  • Dr. John Hubbard, professor, Chemistry, College of Science, 38 years
  • Dr. Penny Kroll, professor, Physical Therapy, College of Health Professions, 6 years
  • Dr. Carlos Lopez, professor, Modern Languages, College of Liberal Arts, 21 years
  • Dr. Joyce Meikamp, professor, Special Education, College of Education  and Professional Development, 24 years
  • Dr. Lee Olson, professor, Leadership Studies, College of Education and Professional Development, 45 years
  • Dr. William Paynter, assistant professor, Educational Foundations, College of Education and Professional Development, 48 years
  • Dr. Jerry Scott, associate professor, Family and Community Health, School of Medicine, 15 years
  • Robert Simpson, instructor, Accountancy and Legal Environment, College of Business, 5 years
  • Dr. Linda Spatig, professor, Educational Foundations, College of Education and Professional Development, 29 years
  • Dr. Nancy Stump, professor, Modern Languages, College of Liberal Arts, 48 years
  • Dr. Ed Taft, professor, English, College of Liberal Arts, 26 years
  • Dr. Jonathan Thompson, associate professor, Computer Science, College of Information Technology and Engineering, 5 years
  • Dr. Linda Winter, associate professor, School Psychology, College of Education and Professional Development, 5 years

Also recognized at the meeting will be eight faculty awards winners, six of whom were announced earlier this week. They are:

  • Dr. Charles E. Hedrick Outstanding Faculty Award: Dr. Phillip T. Rutherford, associate professor, History, College of Liberal Arts
  • Marshall & Shirley Reynolds Outstanding Teacher Award: Dr. Greta Rensenbrink, associate professor, History, College of Liberal Arts
  • Pickens-Queen Teacher Award: Dr. Damien Arthur, assistant professor, Political Science, College of Liberal Arts Dr. Carrie Oeding, assistant professor, English, College of Liberal Arts, and, Dr. Michael Schroeder, assistant professor, Mathematics, College of Science
  • The new Council of Chairs Award for Excellence in Teaching: Anna Rollins, instructor, English, College of Liberal Arts

Also to be announced are two other faculty award winners – the Hedrick Program Grant for Teaching Innovation and the Hedrick Faculty Teaching Fellow.

All faculty, staff, students, and members of the public are invited to attend the general faculty meeting. After the meeting, a reception to honor the retiring and award-winning faculty will be held in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center.
