Christian Joel Paredes, a senior at Huntington High School, is the recipient of the President Stephen J. Kopp Memorial Huntington Rotary Club Scholarship, the club has announced.

The scholarship award for the 2016-17 school year is for $5,000 with $1,250 provided each year for up to eight total semesters.

Paredes has been a volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters, Special Olympics, American Red Cross, Guyandotte Civil War Days, National Honors Society and JROTC.

“We selected Christian because of the vision he has for his life, his great desire to attend Marshall University and our desire to make going to college affordable for him,” said scholarship chair John Anderson. “This young man will make a difference in the world. We are proud to call him a son of Marshall.”

“The applicants for the Huntington Rotary Club Stephen J. Kopp Memorial Rotary Club Scholarship were outstanding, making our decision-making process a difficult one. Each student was deserving. We have great faith that each student will do well at Marshall.”

Rotary President Jeff Faucette said the club has a long history of supporting Marshall University “by providing scholarships and providing oversight to the university’s Rotaract club, the college version of Rotary.”

“We encourage our students to improve the local and global community through volunteerism and leadership. We are extremely honored to provide this scholarship to Christian.”
