Marshall University will host its fifth free cyber safety summit Thursday, Nov. 17, in which middle-school students and local community members will have the opportunity to learn about good digital citizenship and how to stay safe online.

The summit will take place in the conference room of the Big Sandy Superstore Arena from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to John Sammons, associate professor in the Department of Forensic Sciences and director of the Digital Forensics and Information Assurance program at Marshall.

“Our kids spend a tremendous amount of time engaged with technology,” Sammons said. “While there is no doubt that technology has enormous benefits, it is also true that there are some risks as well. Our summit aims to make kids safe and intelligent users of technology.”

During the sessions participants can learn how to prevent cyber bullying, keep themselves and their families safe online, handle the dangers of social media, keep their information and computers safe, and identify scams. In addition, they can find out how and why criminals target them and more.

The event is sponsored by the Digital Forensics and Information Assurance program, the FBI, the Big Sandy Superstore Arena and the Appalachian Institute of Digital Evidence. Reserve your seat before Nov. 1 by contacting Sammons at sammons17@marshall.edu or by calling 304-696-7241.
