School of Medicine students recognized for grades, community service

The Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine recognized 107 students and 11 faculty, staff and residents at its fall awards banquet Tuesday.

Seven members from the Class of 2019 were recognized for achieving a 4.0 grade point average during the 2015-2016 academic year—their first year of medical school. Nine members of the Class of 2018 earned a 4.0 GPA during 2015-2016—their second year of medical school—and seven members of the Class of 2018 were recognized for earning a 4.0 during both their first and second years of medical school.

More than 100 medical students from the classes of 2017, 2018 and 2019 received Community Service Awards for completing at least 40 hours of community service during 2015-2016.

Additionally, students recognized the following faculty, staff and residents for awards voted on by each class:

Class of 2019

  • Best All-Around Professor – Sasha N. Zill, Ph.D., professor, department of biomedical sciences
  • Outstanding Creativity in Teaching – Maria A. Serrat, Ph.D., associate professor, department of biomedical sciences
  • Above and Beyond in Teaching – Laura Richardson, Ph.D., professor, department of biomedical sciences
  • Best Block Leader – Lawrence Grover, Ph.D., professor, department of biomedical sciences

Class of 2018

  • Creativity in Teaching Award – Felix H. Cheung, M.D., associate professor, department of orthopaedics
  • Commitment to Learning – Nancy Norton, M.D., associate professor, department of pathology
  • Excellence in Education – Richard Egleton, Ph.D., associate professor, department of biomedical sciences

Class of 2017

  • Best Clerkship – Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Best Attending – Kelly E. Melvin, M.D., assistant professor, department of psychiatry & behavioral medicine
  • Best Resident – Jacob T. Kilgore, M.D., fourth-year Medicine/Pediatrics resident
  • Best Clerkship Coordinator – Melinda Wyrick, department of obstetrics and gynecology
