Marshall University celebrates first-generation college students

Share
Marshall University joined institutions across the nation this week to honor first-generation college students, faculty, staff and alumni in honor of the First-Generation College Celebration (FGCC). As part of the national celebration, Marshall hosted events, highlighted resources, shared success stories and launched a new video highlighting those who were the first in their families to pursue higher education.

FGCC is an annual opportunity to raise awareness of the first-generation college student identity. Since the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) and FirstGen Forward (FGF) hosted the inaugural celebration in 2017, hundreds of higher education institutions, K-12 schools and various organizations have joined together to recognize the achievements of the first-gen community on and around Nov. 8 each year.

“For the past six years, Marshall University has proudly participated in the national First-Generation College Celebration,” said Bonnie Bailey, director of Student Support Services at Marshall.

“This annual event is crucial for raising awareness about the unique experiences and achievements of first-gen students. It allows us to highlight their resilience and success while connecting them with resources and support. The celebration fosters a sense of community and belonging, reminding students that they are not alone in their journey.”

Nearly half of Marshall’s students identify as first-generation students. The university is committed to providing tailored resources and support to ensure their success.

“Marshall University offers an ideal community size, where students can feel a strong sense of belonging,” Bailey said. “The university’s Student Support Services TRIO Program is dedicated to helping first-generation students. Many of the university’s faculty and staff are also first-generation graduates. This provides valuable insight and understanding of the unique barriers and needs faced by first-gen students.”

Marshall University is committed to fostering an inclusive learning environment, ensuring that first-generation students can reach their full potential. The celebration of First-Generation College Student Week reflects the university’s commitment to breaking down barriers and building pathways to success for all students.

“The First-Gen Committee at Marshall has expanded to include representatives from all across campus,” Bailey said. “This diverse group works together to plan the annual First-Gen Day celebration, raising awareness, and provide valuable resources to support first-generation students across campus. The committee also created the university’s new First-Gen website.”

Launched in March, the First-Gen website was created to serve as a launch pad for both current and prospective first-generation students at Marshall. One of the components of this site is a directory of first-gen faculty and staff. The directory includes first-gen faculty and staff who have requested to participate and allows students to easily find and connect with a community of faculty and staff who have been in their shoes and may be able to help them navigate their transition into higher education.
