Arthur to explore Byrd’s national, state impact through Senate Appropriations Committee

Share
Marshall University’s Dr. Damien Arthur will explore the late U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd’s tenure on the Senate Appropriations Committee in a presentation set for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, in the Drinko Library Atrium at Marshall’s Huntington campus.

Arthur, an assistant professor of political science in Marshall’s College of Liberal Arts, researched Byrd’s impact in that committee position, which wielded power and influenced national spending and policy priorities. His presentation will take a look at the sometimes controversial politician’s leadership and his effect on his home state and the Appalachian region.

Fellowship funding from the West Virginia Humanities Council has supported Arthur in this project, which historically and empirically assesses how a man considered by some as one of the most vigorous and dynamic senators in modern history advanced a political philosophy of the government’s responsibility to alleviate suffering. Arthur’s research utilizes the latent data in the congressional papers of Robert C. Byrd from 1959 – 2009 at the newly constructed Byrd Center for Congressional History.
