Marshall University’s Women’s Center and Women’s Studies program presented the Women of Marshall Awards at a reception at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 5, in Drinko Library.

Leah Tolliver, director of Marshall’s Women’s Center, said the ceremony is for women and men who are at the forefront of affecting women’s issues.

“We really want to be able to honor and give recognition to the women and men in our community who are working toward gender equity, multiculturalism, and looking at the perspective of women’s issues and how to best address these programs in our communities,” Tolliver said.

“I think it’s important that we recognize the people who are addressing them from a proactive standpoint rather than all these reactive standpoints.”

Tolliver said the awards program was initially developed in 1996, but took a hiatus and returned 5 years ago.
