Marshall University students are invited to take an experiential learning journey to understand where, why and how 795 million people live with chronic hunger in our modern world.

Hunger is an issue of utmost importance both locally and globally, according to Dr. Kelli Williams, director of the university’s Department of Dietetics.

“HungerU visiting Marshall’s Huntington campus is an excellent opportunity to expose students, faculty and staff to issues related to hunger and help them become part of the solution,” Williams said. “The Department of Dietetics is involved in several endeavors to help end hunger in our region and we look forward to HungerU helping us spread the word on campus.”

On Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, the HungerU exhibit will be on Marshall’s campus. Maddie Skellie, tour manager for HungerU, said participants will have the opportunity to engage through a variety of interactive learning opportunities, including games, online modeling tools and peer-to-peer discussions with the HungerU crew.

“HungerU is an exciting interactive exhibit that welcomes everyone to join the conversation about hunger solutions,” Skellie said. “We are connecting every student with a way to become part of the solution in whatever capacity they are able. At the end of the day, it’s our generation that will not be able to ignore hunger. It’s been called the world’s most solvable problem, and it’s going to be up to us.”

The fall 2016 tour of HungerU will – or has – focused on the Southeast region of the United States. The schedule also includes the National FFA Convention, West Virginia University, University of Tennessee, Wake Forest University, University of Georgia, University of North Carolina, Tuskegee University and Fort Valley State University. The experience offers participants a range of ways to tangibly engage on food security issues, including donating meals, connecting with national-level policymakers and interacting with farmers.

“As a planet we have significant hunger challenges, and they are becoming more complex every day,” Skellie said. “Helping people understand the causes of hunger and inspiring them to become part of the solution is what the HungerU Tour is all about. It does not have to be this way, and getting everyone involved is vital to the hunger solution.”
