Dr. Mary B. Moore of Huntington, professor emerita of English at Marshall University, has been named the winner of the 2016 Dogfish Head Poetry Prize for her manuscript Flicker.

The official presentation took place Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Dogfish Inn in Lewes, Delaware, and was given to her by Sam Calagione, CEO of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, and Andrew Greeley, innkeeper at the inn.

Moore’s award consisted of publication of her manuscript by Broadkill River Press, 10 copies of the published manuscript, $500 in prize money, and a night’s stay at the Dogfish Inn.

Moore taught poetry, composition and Shakespeare for 19 years at Marshall. She retired from the English Department in 2014 and is the author of two other books of poetry, Eating the Light (Sable Books) and The Book of Snow (Cleveland State Poetry Center).

Moore also worked for the Honors College as a part-time administrator for four years. During her tenure at Marshall, she won both the Hedrick Outstanding Faculty and the Distinguished Scholars and Artists awards for teaching and scholarship.

Carol Frost, one of three final judges along with Baron Wormser of Vermont and Jan Beatty of Pennsylvania, gave a brief reading before Moore was awarded her prize.

Frost said of Moore’s work “….with fresh, nuanced language—words and sounds of the words—the poet affirms reality and creates something else, something familiar and entirely new.”

Amanda Newell, of Maryland, the 2010 winner of the prize, also read at the presentation.

The Dogfish Head Poetry Prize is in its 14th year and was created by Calagione and Jamie Brown of Broadkill River Press. The contest is open to residents of North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and the District of Columbia.

Publication of the winning manuscript is supported by The Cape Gazette of Lewes, Delaware.
