Marshall Online AI Initiatives and Collaborations:
- Marshall Online’s Dr. Julia Spears is co-chairing with Jeff Elliott (Purdue University) an AI and Student Success working group of UERU’s Advising Administrators Community of Practice (AACoP) — a cross-institution collaboration exploring ways to leverage AI for student success.
- Marshall is working with AWS to pilot the use of AI to create optimal pathways for reentry and targeted student engagement.
- Marshall Online is piloting a partnership with Khan Academy to embed Khanmigo, an AI learning assistant, in select online courses for spring 2025.
- Dr. Julia Spears is part of a panel presenting “AI and Student Success: A Tool for Equity and Access” at the UERU National Conference in January. Other co-panelists represent Arizona State University, University of Michigan, University of Notre Dame, WGU Labs, and Lumen Learning.

A Conversation with Dr. David Wiley

Dr. David Wiley joined Mary Welch for a conversation about the transformative potential for generative AI in higher education. Acknowledging recent reports on faculty tech burnout and AI hesitance, Dr. Wiley offers practical tips for getting started with generative AI. He also shares successful projects enhancing educational equity, some surprising ways students interact with AI, and the possibilities he’s most excited about.

Marshall Skills Exchange: Introduction to Generative AI
|
|
|
|
Marshall employees have free access to the Introduction to Generative AI microcredential, a short course that offers a good base knowledge of current AI functions and strategies for better utilization. Completing this short course is the first step to earning the full “Introduction to Generative AI” microcredential.
|
|
|

|
How to Register:
- Visit https://marshall.geniussis.com/Registration.aspx?aid=131
- Click “Already Have a Marshall Account?” to sign in using your Marshall credentials, then click “Marshall SSO Login.”
- Choose your Marshall e-mail and continue the login process.
- This will take you to the Shopping Cart with the “Introduction to Generative AI” course already in it. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click “Confirm” to register for the course. There is no cost for the course.
- On the confirmation page, click the “Go to Dashboard” button to navigate to the Learner Dashboard. On the Learner Dashboard, click the tile “Introduction to Generative AI” to go to the course in Blackboard Ultra.
The next course, Introduction to Generative AI and Ethics, will be available in a few weeks.

Marshall Online Student Connection:
The Marshall Online Student Engagement team created a dedicated organization within Blackboard to enhance the online student experience, foster student connections and promote a sense of belonging. It includes resources such as Fall Plan-on-a-Page, study tips, and information about student support and student opportunities. The Marshall Online Student Connection also offers AI-powered tools and resources, along with a video showcasing how to use them for research and citations to support academic success.

Online Student Advisory Council:
The Marshall Online Student Advisory Council will collaborate closely with Marshall Online staff and faculty to provide valuable feedback on learning in a virtual environment, evaluate both new and existing student engagement initiatives, and identify opportunities for improvement. Through this role, members will gain experience in advocacy, leadership, and communication, while engaging with peers and building relationships with university leadership. Meet four of the twelve members from this council.

“Artificial Intelligence: Resources to Inspire”: Marshall University is one of the five universities that are spotlighted in The Chronicle of Higher Ed’s article for building AI expertise. The article specifically highlights this page from the Design Center as an example of practical guidance for teaching with AI.

Center for Teaching and Learning: This Faculty Resouces for AI page includes pedagogical resources, examples from other institutions, and other information related to AI. Join their AI Playground Community of Practice Fridays at 2pm.
Information Technology: Marshall is the first higher education institute in West Virginia to partner with Adobe Creative Campus. Get access to Adobe Express, which includes Firefly, Adobe’s new, innovative generative AI technology. Marshall employees and students have access to Microsoft Copilot as well. Copilot is an AI-powered tool that can help with productivity, creativity, and communication.
