Scholarships for Metro Applicants

First-time freshmen students who are charged the “metro” tuition rate may qualify for one of the scholarships listed in the chart below.

2024-2025 Merit-based Scholarships for Incoming Freshmen – Metro

The incoming freshman’s high school grade point average (GPA) and official admission test scores are used to determine merit-based scholarship eligibility at Marshall University. Only official test scores from ACT® or SAT® are used to consider incoming freshmen students for merit-based scholarships. Marshall University takes the highest ACT composite or SAT combined Math and Evidenced-Based Reading & Writing Score to determine scholarship eligibility for its scholarship programs. Marshall University also combines the highest sub-scores from different test dates (from the same test) to create a superscore total or composite. The superscore total or composite is used when it is higher than the ACT composite or SAT combined Math and Evidence-Based Reading & Writing Score for eligibility determination of the scholarships listed in the chart above.

These merit-based scholarships are awarded for four academic years (fall and spring semesters) as long as the student is pursuing his or her first baccalaureate degree and maintains full-time enrollment at Marshall University. In addition, the student must meet the following renewal criteria:

• Successfully complete at least 30 credit hours each academic year
• Earn at least a 2.75 GPA at the end of freshman year and a 3.0 GPA by the end of the sophomore and junior years
• Has not earned a baccalaureate degree

These metro student scholarship awards are tuition waivers. A tuition waiver may only apply to Marshall University tuition charges. These tuition waiver scholarships do not apply to students enrolled in a distance education program. They do not cover tuition charges from St. Mary’s Center for Education and other third-party agreements with colleges and universities.

Incoming Freshmen Honors College Scholarship

In addition to a freshmen merit-based scholarship, students who meet the following criteria and agree to accept admission into the Marshall University Honors College qualify to receive an additional scholarship award.

Superscores are not used to determine eligibility for the Honors College Scholarship.

The Honors College Scholarship is awarded for four academic years (fall and spring semesters) as long as the student is pursuing his or her first baccalaureate degree, remains in the Honors College, and maintains full-time enrollment at Marshall University. Honors College students must also meet the following renewal criteria:

• Successfully complete at least 30 credit hours each academic year
• Earn an overall 3.3 GPA at the end of each academic year

The Achievement Tuition Waiver Grant is available to assist incoming first-time freshmen who have exceptional financial need based on the results of the FAFSA.

Eligibility for the Achievement Tuition Waiver Grant and the amount of the award is determined based on the student’s demonstrated unmet financial need and the student’s high school academic performance. Students qualifying for this program may receive the grant up to four academic years (fall and spring semesters) while pursuing their first baccalaureate degree. In addition to demonstrating exceptional financial need, incoming first-time freshmen must meet the following criteria to receive this award:

• File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by April 15 prior to the academic year enrolling
• Earn a High School Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher.
• Live in on-campus housing.
• Enroll full-time.
• Submit all required documentation for federal verification, if required.

The value of the Achievement Tuition Waiver Grant typically stays the same each academic year it is renewed as long as the student meets the following criteria.

• File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) annually.
• Submit all required documentation for federal verification, if required.
• Earn at least a 2.0 Marshall and overall grade point average.
• Earn 30 credit hours each academic year.
• Live in on-campus housing.
• Maintain full-time enrollment.

The tuition waiver grant may only be applied to Marshall University tuition charges. This tuition waiver grant does not apply to students who do not live on campus and who are enrolled in a distance education program. This waiver does not cover tuition charges from St. Mary’s Center for Education and other third-party agreements with colleges and universities. Be advised that the amount of this award is subject to change in accordance with federal and state regulations and institutional policy when the student’s unmet financial need changes due to verification, the student receives additional financial aid awards, or there are other circumstances that affect the student’s financial aid eligibility.

This program provides a tuition scholarship waiver to offset the cost of the Metro Tuition Rate to that of the WV Resident Tuition Rate to first-time freshmen whose parent or grandparent graduated from Marshall University. In addition, the student must meet the following criteria:

• Metro residency status
• ACT composite score of 26 or higher or SAT Evidence-based Reading and Writing + Math score of 1240) and H.S. GPA of 3.5 or higher
• Full-time enrollment

First-time freshmen are automatically considered for this program when they indicate on their Admission Application that their parent or grandparent graduated from Marshall University. The student’s parent or grandparent must be an “active” alumnus or alumna. In order to confirm your eligibility for this program, you must complete the Alumni Legacy Tuition Reduction Scholarship Questionnaire and submit it to the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

Recipients of the Legacy Tuition Reduction Scholarship forfeit receipt of any other Marshall University Scholarship or Tuition Waiver Programs. Students shall be awarded either the Alumni Legacy or other Marshall University Scholarship/Grant awards depending on which is more advantageous.

The tuition waiver scholarship may only be applied to Marshall University metro tuition charges. This tuition waiver scholarship does not apply to students enrolled in a distance education program. This scholarship waiver does not cover tuition charges from St. Mary’s Center for Education and other consortium colleges and universities.

This is a 4-year tuition scholarship waiver program that is renewable if the student maintains at least a 2.0 GPA, completes successfully at least 30 credit hours each academic year, and maintains Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress. The amount of the award is the difference between Metro and WV tuition rates.

Society of Yeager Scholars receive scholarships totaling the cost of tuition, standard fees, housing and food (student must obtain permission to live off campus), a stipend, a book allowance, a personal computer, a summer study program at Exeter College, Oxford, and funds for further study abroad experience (after applying any qualifying federal and state grants and scholarships). (Award amounts vary) – Awarded to qualified students who participate in intercollegiate athletics or cheerleading. Information about athletic scholarships can be obtained by contacting the Marshall University Athletic Department. According to NCAA Bylaws, student-athletes receiving a combination of athletic and other scholarships and grants may have limitations on the total amount the student athlete may receive. Please contact the Office of Student Financial Assistance for more information.

(Award amounts vary) – There are hundreds of grant and scholarship funds that have been endowed by an individual or are made available in memory of a family member. Companies and individuals also make several dozen private scholarships available to students on an annual basis.

Eligibility for these scholarships varies according to the donor’s wishes and not all scholarships are renewable. For most of these scholarships, all financial aid applicants are automatically considered. Print the Marshall University Private Scholarship Applications for which you want to be considered. Then complete and submit as instructed on each application.

This program may provide a tuition waiver covering the total cost of the West Virginia resident Capital Fee and the resident Education and General (E & G) to eligible dependents of Marshall University employees.

Dependents of Marshall University employees may apply for this scholarship by completing the Employee Dependent Undergraduate Scholarship Program application and submitting it to the Office of Human Resource Services, located in Room 207, Old Main.

Transfer students who are charged the metro tuition rate qualify for the following awards. To receive this award, the student must be enrolled full-time as an undergraduate student.

This scholarship is renewable for two additional semesters beyond the first year of eligibility as long as the student is pursuing his or her first baccalaureate degree, maintains an overall grade point average of 3.0, and successfully completes 30 credit hours at Marshall University after one academic year.

This is a tuition waiver scholarship and may only be applied to Marshall University tuition charges; it may not be applied to charges for on-line courses. This scholarship waiver does not cover tuition charges from St. Mary’s Center for Education and other consortium colleges and universities.
