FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Huntington, W.Va. – Students from Marshall University’s public radio station, WMUL-FM, received 14 awards in the International AVA Digital Awards 2019 Competition, which recognizes outstanding creative professionals involved in the concept, direction, design, and production of media that are part of the evolution of digital communication. The approximately 2,500 entries are judged by members of the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP).
“I am proud and grateful for the honor these AVA Platinum, Gold and Honorable Mention Awards bestow on WMUL-FM, the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications, the College of Arts and Media and Marshall University,” said Dr. Chuck G. Bailey, professor of radio-television production and management in the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications and faculty manager of WMUL-FM. “These AVA Awards are a tribute to the continual quality and commitment to the news and sports coverage, creative programming, station promotion, and having an online presence that our broadcast students exhibit in competition with professional practitioners.”
The Platinum Award-winning entries by WMUL-FM were in the following categories:
Radio Sports Package/Podcast
“Hall of Fame Class of 2017,” written and produced by Luke Creasy, a graduate from Huntington, broadcast in September 2017 and made available online.
“Running Game Hitting its Stride,” written and produced by Spencer DuPuis, a junior from Leesburg, Virginia, broadcast in October 2018 and made available online.
Radio Sports Play-by-Play Programming
WMUL-FM’s broadcast of Marshall football versus North Carolina State University in September 2017. Students calling the game were:
Play-by-Play announcer – Adam Rogers, a graduate from Milton;
Color Commentator – Luke Creasy;
Analyst/On-site Producer – Dr. Chuck G. Bailey;

The March 16, 2018, edition of “Basketball Friday Night in West Virginia,” a collaborative high school sports radio program between WMUL-FM and WFGH-FM in Fort Gay, West Virginia, that is broadcast to a statewide audience.

The “5:00 p.m. Edition of Newscenter 88” broadcast in April 2017. The students who participated in this newscast were:
Luke Creasy (Producer); Matt Groves, a senior from Ripley (Anchor); Kyra Biscarner, a senior from Marysville, Michigan (Anchor); Nathan Thomas, a recent graduate from Charleston (Weather); Adam Rogers (Sports Anchor).

“Out of this World,” an in-house promotional announcement broadcast in WMUL-FM’s Promotion Announcement rotation beginning in August 2017, written and produced by Brian Leonard, a graduate from Huntington, and featuring the voice talents of Luke Creasy, Adam Rogers, Dylan Stone and Savanah Matney, a junior from South Point, Ohio.
Regularly Scheduled Audio/Radio Program/Podcast
WMUL-FM’s Classroom Concerts Series, featuring the band “Colly.” Live interviews were conducted by host Austin Creel. Producers included Sam Adkins, senior from Huntington, and Michael Stanley, WMUL-FM’s Operations Manager from West Hamlin. The program was broadcast over WMUL-FM and posted online in April 2018, and made available online.
