After four seasons under the hand of Charles Huff, the Herd has hired North Carolina State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson to take the reins.

Marshall announced the hiring one day after the Thundering Herd defeated the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns to capture the school’s first ever Sun Belt Conference Championship.

Gibson, 52, returns to his home state, being a Van, WV native. He comes in with a truly impressive resume, spending the previous six seasons as a defensive coordinator and linebacker coach at N.C. State, while also having stints of being either an assistant or coordinator at West Virginia University (2001-2007 & 2013-2018), University of Michigan (2008-2010), Pitt (2011), and Arizona (2012).

Gibson was a player himself from 1991-1994, where he suited up as a defensive back for Glenville State. As a coach, he has experienced 16 bowl games, as well as coaching 22 future professionals, 27 all-conference team members, and five All-Americans.

Marshall University will introduce Gibson at a press conference on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 4:30 p.m. in the Encova Auditorium at the Brad D. Smith Center for Business and Innovation.
