Huntington, W.Va. (WMUL 88.1 FM) — Marshall looks to close four game homestand winners of two in a row as it plays host to Southern Miss.
The Herd enters 6-13 overall and comes off a 67-60 win over Georgia Southern on Wednesday for the first conference win of the Juli Fulks era. Southern Miss comes in 6-13 overall and comes off a road loss 62-47 at James Madison on Friday.
Marshall’s win over Georgia Southern snapped a 7-game losing streak dating back to Dec. 19 against Texas State to start conference play.
Aislynn Hayes led the way in scoring for Marshall in the contest against the Eagles with 25 points, going 9-of-15 from the field. CC Mays also had a strong performance with 17 points and 5 rebounds.
The Herd shot 41% overall from the field, and 33% from three-point land. What helped the Herd in the win was forcing 22 turnovers, while capturing 24 points off those turnovers. Georgia Southern only had 10 points off turnovers, as the Eagles forced 16 Herd turnovers.
“Obviously, I am really excited for our team to get that win and finally get that monkey off our back,” Coach Juli Fulks said in the Georgia Southern post-game press conference.
Now Marshall will look for back-to-back wins for the first time since wins over Tulsa and Salem at the beginning of the season.
For Southern Miss, the Golden Eagles look to avoid back-to-back losses on the road after falling 62-47 at James Madison on Friday.
The Golden Eagles kept it close for the first three quarters of the game but were outscored by the Dukes 20-7 in the fourth quarter. Melyia Grayson led in scoring for Southern Miss with 17 points in the contest along with 14 rebounds, earning a double-double.
The Golden Eagles struggled shooting the basketball against the Dukes, going 31.6% from the field, 15.8% from the three-point line. James Madison also outrebounded Southern Miss 55 to 37.
Melyia Grayson leads the Golden Eagles in scoring on the season, averaging 14.7 points per game, followed by Nyla Jean with an average of 12.2 points per game.
This game Sunday will be the last of a four game homestand, as the Herd will be on the road for the next three games in conference play.
