HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — On Wednesday Night, the Marshall Thundering Herd (10-18) and the ULM Warhawks (11-16) met in Huntington at the Cam Henderson Center. The Herd was looking to stay hot and win its third straight game, while the Warhawks also looked to win their third straight game. Both teams needed a win in order to get a first-round bye in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
It was a back-and-forth game that the Herd was able to claw away at, winning with a final score of 73-65.
Marshall came out in control in the first quarter, as it shot 44% from the field and 33% from behind the arc to build a 19-13 lead.
ULM would fight back in the second quarter, as it shot 40% to the Herd’s 33%. The Warhawks would outscore Marshall in the quarter, 17-13, to bring the game to within two at the break.
ULM didn’t let up as it would gain a two-point lead in the third. This effort was highlighted by the Warhakws shooting 60% (3/5) from three-point range.
ULM seemed to have the game sealed with a minute to go, but a Timberlynn yeast steal and bucket through contact for a three-point play would get the herd up by two, a lead that it would hold on to for the rest of the game.
Marshall came up big at the free-throw line, especially in the 4th quarter, as it took 14 attempts from the charity stripe and only missed one.
The Herd rattled the ULM offense as it forced 17 turnovers, seven of which came in the fourth quarter, allowing the Herd to capitalize.
Marshall also fixed its foul trouble woes and was able to maintain control and not get fouls called for ULM to go to the free-throw line, which was a big factor in the game.
Marshall will play its final regular season game tomorrow night as it hosts Georgia State. That game will tip off at 6 p.m.
