HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — On Tuesday, the Marshall Thundering Herd baseball team took on old rival Ohio University at Jack Cook field in a one-off game which marked the Herd’s 12th game of the season.

Marshall (5-6) came into the game off of a three-game sweep at home over Fairleigh Dickinson University. Meanwhile, the Bobcats (3-7) came to Huntington after beating the Butler Bulldogs in a three-game series, 2-1.

The game itself was a nail-biter coming down to the bottom of the 12th inning. Marshall started off well, scoring two runs in the second, one from a Tyler Kamerer double and the other on a Jackson Golden single to center field. Marshall didn’t keep the lead for long, giving up four runs in the third inning before finally getting on the board again in the fifth from a Tyler Kamerer lineout. Despite the run, Marshall still trailed 6-3.

Both teams would be held scoreless until the eighth where the Herd rattled off three runs in the bottom of the inning, two coming from a Maika Niu triple and one on a Matty Go single. Still trailing 7-6, the Herd kept it going into the ninth when Ethan Murdoch went yard to tie the ball game.

The game would see yet another scoring drought, this time between the ninth and the twelfth. Scoreless or not, it didn’t matter for the Herd when AJ Havrilla came up to bat with runners on all three bases. Havrilla cracked the ball to left field and that was all she wrote as Havrilla’s grand slam walked off the Bobcats in the 12th inning.

While the Herd may have hit well, it couldn’t have gotten the job done without stellar pitching from the bullpen. Charlie Krebs and Luke Proehl both pitched two innings, giving up just one hit apiece and finishing with a 0.00 ERA. Meanwhile, Nicholas Weyrich earned the victory, giving up just two hits and finishing with a 1.35 ERA. None of the three pitchers gave up any runs in their combined six innings, helping to set the stage for Havrilla’s late game heroics.

This win marks five straight for the Herd, who is now back at .500. Marshall will look for its sixth straight win on Friday when it begins a three-game home series against Bradley that stretches to Sunday. The series should prepare the Herd for a tough year in Sun Belt Conference play, which begins on March 14th on the road against Arkansas State.
