HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) — The Marshall Softball Team took on Loyola Chicago and Valparaiso University in a double header this past Sunday at Dot Hicks Field. The Herd came into the day with a record of 10-11, including wins over both teams on Friday and Saturday.
The first game of the double header saw the Herd take on Loyola Chicago in a game that only lasted six innings, ending with a 13-5 victory in favor of the home team. Marshall quickly fell behind 4-1 at the top of the third inning, however, this didn’t last long as third baseman Tia Titi hit a 2 RBI double to left field.
Once the Herd got the gas going, it never let up, scoring three more times in the fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead before keeping that momentum going into the fifth. In the fifth the Herd sealed the deal, centerfielder Kasia Parks connected with the ball tripling to right center field for two more Marshall RBIs.
While the Herd did hit well, a stellar day of pitching helped pave the way to the win. Lindsay Henson was great, only allowing one run, getting a win over Loyola pitcher Peyton Pepkowski and finishing the game with a 3.60 ERA.
The second game of the day for Marshall wasn’t as high scoring but still allowed the Herd to showcase great play in a 5-0 win over Valpo. Marshall’s Titi continued an awesome day of hitting when she hit two singles, one to left field and the other to right, that punched in three RBIs. Titi was aided by a Diamond Leslie fly out to right field and a Bub Feringa single that both tallied an RBI apiece.
Pitcher Jules King carried the load for the Herd, pitching all seven innings. King gave up only three hits while allowing zero runs. She finished with a 3.56 ERA and a win over Valpo pitcher Azalya Lopez.
The Herd completed an impressive sweep of Marshall March Madness, beating all three invitees twice in the University of Buffalo, Valpo, and Loyola.
The set of victories couldn’t come at a better time as Marshall has a tough test ahead of it when it hosts 24th ranked Liberty University in a one-off game at Dot Hicks Field on Tuesday. The possibility for a ranked win before starting conference play against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns on Friday should excite all Herd fans as the ladies look to stay undefeated at home.
