HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) The Marshall Thundering Herd Baseball Team reunited with the Eastern Kentucky Colonels. Marshall (13-15) met EKU (4-24) for the second time this year as the Herd returned to Jack Cook Field after its series against ranked Troy last weekend.
Eastern Kentucky took game 1 by a score of 6-2 and was looking to earn its fifth win of the year and second non conference win of the year. Meanwhile, Marshall was looking to steer momentum back on its side after its upset win against 20th-ranked Troy on the road on Sunday.
EKU would start out fast as Tait Nunnally would get a groundout with the bases loaded to score Diego Alana and give the Colonels an early 1-0 lead.
The matchup would turn into a pitcher’s duel, and both teams would struggle offensively as they were only able to muster up one hit each heading into the top of the sixth inning.
Despite having only one hit through six, Marshall was finally able to crack a run across in the bottom of the seventh inning. Shortstop Maika Niu would lead off the inning with a single and eventually steal 2nd base to get into scoring position for the Herd. Ethan Murdoch was next up and he wasted no time as we would hit a line drive single to left field that would score Niu and give Murdoch his team leading 24th RBI on the year.
EKU would have a chance to take the lead in the ninth with runners on first and second with two outs. On a full-count pitch, Greg Caban hit a line drive to center that looked like it would drop in, but center fielder Cam Harthan chased down the ball with just enough time to spare to make a remarkable diving catch to save the inning and a run, keeping the game tied.
For the second time this year, Marshall would go into extras at Jack Cook Field, but it would not be as long as the Ohio game back in March.
After a Cam Harthan leadoff single to start the 10th inning, third baseman Eddie Leon would take a 0-2 pitch down the third base line that would get to the wall and score Harthan from first base, giving Marshall the scrappy 2-1 win.
With the win, Marshall moves to 14-15 on the year as EKU falls to 4-25. Marshall looks to take this momentum into the weekend for a weekend series against the 13th-ranked Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles as Marshall looks to advance up the Sun Belt Conference standings.
Game one will be Friday at 6 p.m. with game two on Saturday at 4 p.m. The series will round out on Sunday at noon with game three.
